Tuesday Patriots Updates

Well its been a quite Tuesday so here's the main news of the day:
Brandon Browner and Brian Tyms are finally ready to get on the field this week. It's obviously interesting for a number of reasons.

  • Can Tyms build off his solid preseason and help solidify the passing attack?
  • How much better will the defense be with Brandon Browner? I can't wait to find out.
By the way, it's good to hear Tom Brady straight deny the reports that he wants out of New England.Kind of ridiculous this started when the team was 0-2. I said going into the game our Patriots have been written off and they hadn't even played an October game. While the Patriots have yet to prove their problems are solved they've proven they still have the fire that's driven this team to do great things. While I'm not expect big things, if Tyms could become a reliable target for Brady this offense will really be confusing for defenses to stop.

As good has Revis has been, I can only imagine how much better the defense would be with an effective Browner on the opposite side.

Exciting times are ahead my fellow Patriot fans...

Saturday's Patriots Notes

  • As you've probably heard by now, Adrian Peterson has been booked and released from jail. He was deactivated for this Sunday's game against the Patriots after news of his arrest. It goes without saying this is a huge advantage for a struggling Patriots run defense.

  • Second year linebacker Jamie Collins was seen yesterday walking with a limp in the Patriots locker room. At this point in the week unless he heals quickly I can see Collins being out for his first game. Chances are that Rob Ninkovich moves to outside linebacker while Dont'a Hightower goes back to inside linebacker.

  • With Adrian Peterson out, the most important things on defense are to hit Cassel and make sure you know where Cordarelle Patterson is at all times. Not exactly rocket science but easier said then done of course.

  • It's still early but it would be a great sight to see some chemistry begin to develop on the offensive line this week.

Patriots Players to Keep Your Eye On

Here is my list of Patriots players I have my eye on right now..

  • Sealver Siliga - The Patriots are going to need to give Vince Wilfork more muscle upfront if they want to effectively stop the run. Joe Vellano is a backup at best and either Siliga or Chris Jones should be starting instead. Jones was inactive for week one against the Dolphins but Siliga had a pretty good game and stepped up for the Patriots last year on run defense. I'm thinking he'll be getting the start this week over Vellano. It goes without saying but without one of Siliga or Jones stepping up big this year the Patriots could be in a lot more trouble then we hope for on Run D.

  • Rob Ninkovich - It was recently reported that Ninkovich got nicked up in Miami. This could indeed be the reason he saw so much less time. However it's hard to ignore the playing time and improvement Dont'a Hightower showed on Sunday. One has to wonder if this is going to be a sign of things to come this season or if this was indeed just due to injuries.

  • Tim Wright - Given the OL's struggles the Patriots need to see some value on their trade and soon. It seems like forever ago since the Patriots had an effective tight end attack. If this offense can get production from Wright, Rob Gronkowski, Julien Edelman, Brandon Lafell and the offensive line corrects itself suddenly the trade looks pretty damn good and the Patriots would then have a formidable air attack again.

  • Brandon LaFell - I'm not as worried as Lafell as others seem to be. Normally with Tom Brady and his receivers you have it or you don't. Not only did the two have a good Training Camp together, but they looked pretty damn good  in week 3 of the preseason. He has never proven himself to be an elite receiver but the Patriots just need him to be another solid option, not a superstar.

Patriots News & Updates 9/9

How are my fellow Patriots fans doing on this fine Tuesday?

After doing quite a bit of reading last night I wanted to share some of my thoughts on some of what went wrong and needs to be fixed rather then finding a scapegoat to harp on all day, so here they are..

  • While it's good to have Rob Gronkowski back and I'm excited to see what Tim Wright can do, the Patriots need to find a blocking tight end. Michael Hoomanawanui has proven he is what he is at this point. He's obviously not much as a receiver but if he can't be called in to help block, the team needs someone who can. Having Daniel Graham help Matt Light block quick pass rushers used to be a big help for the offense. This is something they have still not replaced to this day.

  • While we're on the subject of blocking, lets talk Oline. Ryan Wendell and Dan Connolly have been solid, but never anything special. Before he was hurt in Training Camp rookie center Bryan Stork was competing for time at starting center. The 6'4, 315 rookie has nice size. After looking at some highlights, it seems he needs to get stronger and faster to not only drive linemen, but get to the second level of the defense. His strength is definitely pass blocking. He'll also need to get all the calls down for the offense in order to get on the field. We may not even see Stork this season but I would keep my eye on him.

  • It was clear the Dolphins made some moves coming out of halftime. One of those moves was switching to more of a 5-2 front on Defense. This allowed them to take advantage of a shaky offensive line and the rest was history. I'm not saying having a new offensive line coach wont change things, but it's clear the problems were more communication and execution based then coaching. I hated BB switching players in and out but I wonder if the heat had something to do with that in order to keep guys fresh?

  • Rob Ninkovich banged up? According to Ben Violin of the Boston Globe he suffered "either a pectoral or shoulder injury" early in the third quarter. I didn't notice this at the time, and I'm sure it didn't do the Defense any favors in the second half. I'm hoping it's nothing serious..Knowing Bill Belichick I'm sure we'll have full details come Wednesday.

Patriots-Dolphins Post Game Thoughts

Well that sucked..

Even though the score was 33-20 it felt just like the 31-0 beat down Buffalo put on New England back in 03'. Similar to that infamous game the Patriots could do little right today, offensively or defensively. Is it time to panic? Not yet, but the Patriots have legitimate questions that need to be answered.

1. The Run Defense
What is going on here? This has been a weak unit for the past year. While it's way too early to say they wont get things right this season this is definitely something Pats fans should pay attention to. I'm happy Vince Wilfork is back as much as the next guy, but the run D wasn't exactly great with him healthy last year either. I don't recall anytime in the game where this unit seemed to get a consistent push upfront. Instead they seemed to get pushed around all game long. I'm glad this is happening in Week 1 rater then Week 11, lets hope Bill Belichick can makes the necessary adjustments

2. Offensive Line
I'm sure most people will say the unit struggled due to Logan Mankins departure today. While there's no way to tell how this sudden move impacted the line's chemistry, I think today showed the unit needs time until they're going to be right. Belichick was switching Connolly and Wendell in at Center, when he wasn't doing that he was moving Connolly or Jordan Devey in and out at Guard. Having consistent chemistry on the Offensive line is important, you're going to struggle while you have questions about who goes where, until these positions solidify themselves these could be bumpy for the Patriots on offense.

Funny thing is, this same awful team I'm talking about today was dominating the first half. While it's clear the Dolphins took full advantage of a run defense that was showing leaks in the first half, the sudden total collapse of the offense was a mystery. I give players like Cameron Wake of the Dolphins credit, but today was just a total breakdown on the offensive side of the ball. Tom Brady missing wide open receivers, Rob Gronkowski looking like Diddy Kong instead of Donkey Kong today, etc.

Give the Dolphins credit, they kicked the Patriots ass today. But the Patriots we're like a hot mess that just completely melted down in Sunny South Florida in the second half.

Going into next week's match up, I'm really expecting a bounce back performance. I'm not sold on the Vikings dominating the Rams without Sam Bradford. The run defense certainly will be tested again next week facing Adrian Peterson, if they're off like they were today the Patriots could very well start out 0-2. As much as I want to see the run defense look better next week, I'm just as concerned with the offensive line. They had issues last season, added new pieces during the off season and it's obvious they're still moving those pieces around. The Offensive line has a lot of improving to do, hopefully that happens sooner then later.
